Hey East Coasters! Want to come out and watch online movies accompanied by an audience of living people rather than the solitary glow of your laptop screen? Eat popcorn and drink beer? You may be hipper than us geeks, but we're not that different, are we? Join us on September 24 for a bonus Pier Screenings live event held in New York City, continuing the series we've been running in San Francisco all summer.
The NewTeeVee Pier Screenings summer series is a live extension of NewTeeVee.com, showcasing online video technology and content in a social movie screening format. Community-chosen selections of the best web videos from the Pier Screenings website will be projected on a large screens at The XCHANGE.
THEME
The theme for September is "love stories," which we're opening to wide (but not pornographic) interpretation. Have you made a movie about a crush, a friend, a lover, a favorite food, a favorite place, or anything else you love? If it's under five minutes, and you own the rights to it, submit it to the NewTeeVee community site, and encourage your friends to turn out and rate it. The six most-loved shorts will be shown at the event in New York.
JUDGES
- Amber Lee Ettinger, a.k.a. Obama Girl, and Ben Relles, the co-creator of Obama Girl, have been making us laugh and wince with their timely odes to presidential candidates and American troops. They’ll be co-judging, bringing with them an eye for tenderness in a video love story.
- Jakob Lodwick, founder of personal video-sharing site Vimeo and a prolific video creator himself, is next up. You can learn absolutely everything there is to know about him by following his frequent online dispatches at Obeastiality.com. We’re considering him our expert judge on authenticity.
- And last but not least, we have Kathleen Grace, creator, producer, and director of The Burg, “a serial sitcom about the life of the beautiful people in Brooklyn’s recently gentrified hotspot,” as Jackson described it
in March. In addition to working on the production of feature films and
television shows, she also started the NYC-based comedic street theater
company the Suitcase Players. The Burg was also a finalist at the July Pier Screening. We hope she’ll chip in comments about the humor quotient of our entrants.
SUBMIT YOUR VIDEO!
We’ll be judging the videos this month based on number of views, votes cast, and stars received on the NewTeeVee Pier Screenings site. So how do you submit? Upload your original video to the Pier Screenings site (directions here). The top six videos will be shown at the live event on September 24 on a large screens at The XCHANGE. The live audience at the event will choose the top three winners for the night.
The submission process is rolling, so submit early to increase the possibility of people seeing, liking, and starring your video.

The opportunity to watch, make, mash up and share online video is changing the nature of both entertainment and the Internet itself. NewTeeVee reports on the business of online video, monitoring the spread of broadband as it tears down traditional hierarchies that obstruct content creators from reaching their audiences. We cover everything from content delivery networks to next-generation media players, stupid cat videos to independent filmmakers, and venture-backed content startups to old guard media companies testing the online waters.
